What To Do When Your Washing Machine Breaks Down

We’ve all been there; perhaps you had just put the washing on and settled down with a nice cup of tea when your machine started making clunking noises, or maybe you went to hang up your laundry to find that the door was jammed shut. When your washing machine breaks down you have three options:

    1. Panic and resort to ice cream, hoping that the electrical blight hasn’t affected the freezer. This may make you feel better in the short term, but is unlikely to fix your washer-dryer.
    2. Try to fix the problem yourself. Sometimes the washing machine door won’t open because the drain tube is blocked, meaning the bowl is still full of water. It may be possible to remove the drain tube and check whether anything is blocking it by yourself. If there is nothing visible in the drain tube, it might be that the pump has gone. This will require the help of a washing machine expert (see point 3). If water is spilling out of your washing machine, it could be that the seal is damaged which is possible to fix yourself, but doing so can affect your warranty. As a result, the most advisable option is to…
    3. Contact a registered washing machine specialist. The more information you can give your expert, the more likely it is that they will be able to fix it the first time round. Provide the make and model of your washing machine and a detailed summary of its ‘symptoms’. Make the area as safe as possible by unplugging the machine, turning your water off at the mains, and mopping up any excess water where applicable.
