  • Why Project Manage?

Have you ever had work done on your home where you have had to organise the work to be done efficiently, coordinate trades and work to a budget – it’s hard don’t you think I know I did this two years ago when completing my bathroom and kitchen at the same time – yes you did read that right and yes I must have been bonkers however I was lucky to have such good trades people at my fingers tips that I could call upon, not everyone is so lucky!

I suppose the lessons I have learnt along the way have been good experience and any mistakes made along the way won’t be repeated if I renovate in the future. So what makes a good project manager? And why is it a good idea to delegate to someone else…..

Good project managers are good at organising all the works in a sequence on a budget and on time. Most homeowners will oversee a project themselves to save on costs which is fair enough but often or not they take longer to complete and usually have gaps in schedules whilst waiting for trades or coming up against any problems.

A good project manager will schedule everything and will liaise with local authorities, building control, health and safety and your utility companies. They will also deal with architects and structural engineers if you are working on a bigger project like an extension. They will also organise site meetings ordering and sourcing of building materials which normally take place during working hours which does not encroach on the homeowner’s worktime.

How do I find a good project manager – you will normally find them via recommendation and referral, most good builders will offer this as part of their service commitment to you especially on smaller jobs. If planning something a little bit special it’s always worth seeking out a separate project manager as whilst there is a cost involved it will be worth every penny you spend and your sanity!
